Chapter 05 Question Families Ask

“How do I know whether I’ll actually fit with a team?”

The Short Answer: A website can tell you enrollment. A ranking can tell you competitive standing. A coach can give you a great sales pitch. But none of those things completely answer: 'Will I fit here?' To know that, you have to watch how teammates and coaches interact when nobody is staging a presentation.

What Changed for Our Daughter: Discovering That Team Bond Matters Most

Early in the process, our daughter’s priorities were largely D1 and warm-weather locations. As she actually experienced recruiting, something else became much more important: the team. When she met athletes and spent time around teams, she paid attention to how connected they seemed. Did they support each other? Did they enjoy being together? How did they respond to coaches? Could she picture herself becoming part of that group?

Watch the Team—Don’t Just Listen to the Pitch

When you attend a competition, camp, or campus visit, take your eyes off the scoreboard or the shiny weight room for 15 minutes and watch the people:

  • How do teammates interact during warmups and between reps? Are upperclassmen encouraging freshmen, or is the roster split into tense cliques?
  • How do athletes respond when a coach corrects them? Is the communication respectful and instructional, or do players look fearful and shut down?
  • What happens when an athlete has a bad race or makes a mistake? Does the coach still coach them, or ignore them?
  • Ask yourself the ultimate 4-year question: “Would I want to spend 20+ hours a week for the next four years with these specific people?”
Reality Check

A beautiful campus and an impressive multi-million-dollar athletic facility do not guarantee a great student-athlete experience.

Playbook Tip

Do not choose a college based only on the school. Choose the people you will spend your college years with.

Chapter 05 Frequently Asked Questions

How can we evaluate team culture before an official campus visit?

Watch the team compete at an away meet or game near you, follow how current players support each other, and ask the coach if your athlete can do a 15-minute phone or Zoom chat with one or two current freshmen/sophomores on the roster.

What is the biggest red flag when observing a college team?

When current athletes look nervous around the coaching staff, avoid eye contact after mistakes, or cannot answer simple questions about daily team life without looking to the coach for permission.
