“Should we spend the time and money to attend camps, showcases and recruiting events?”
The Short Answer: Sometimes—but only when the event has a clear, verified purpose. A camp can provide exposure, evaluation, and a chance to experience a coaching staff firsthand. Or it can become an expensive calendar of generic events that never move recruiting forward.
Every week, student-athletes receive mass-marketed 'Special Camp Invitations' in their inbox. Many families mistake a $250 camp registration blast for personal recruiting interest. Before booking flights and hotels, ask what the event will actually accomplish and whether coaches from your target list are genuinely evaluating prospects there.
The 5-Question Pre-Registration Audit (Worksheet 9)
- Are coaches from our target school list actually working or attending this camp? Check the confirmed staff list—not “invited in past years.”
- Have we already contacted those coaches before registering? A camp works best when a coach already knows your name, marks/video, and jersey number before you step on the field or track.
- Does the event format allow meaningful evaluation? A 30-athlete school camp run directly by the head coach offers far more personal interaction than a 600-player cattle-call showcase.
- What is the true total cost? Add registration + flights/gas + hotel + meals + missed training time.
- Is the athlete healthy and ready to perform at the level the event will attract?
Paying a camp registration fee does not mean a college coach is recruiting your athlete. Treat camps and showcases as opportunities to learn and be evaluated—never as promises of roster spots or scholarships.
Do not collect camps. Collect useful information and real relationships.

Chapter 11 Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a college camp invite email is real recruiting interest or a mass marketing blast?
If the email starts with 'Dear Prospective Student-Athlete,' doesn't mention your specific marks/film, and comes from an automated camp registration platform, it is a mass marketing blast. If you like the school, reply directly to the coach's university email with your profile and ask if they are still recruiting your position/event for your grad year.
Are single-school ID camps better than multi-school showcases?
Single-school camps are best when your athlete already has two-way communication with that specific coaching staff and wants to experience their coaching style on campus. Multi-school regional showcases or big invitationals are more cost-effective when several of your Strong Fit / Explore schools will be watching in one location.
